What is the Meaning of the Armor of God?

We are in the midst of war. There is a supernatural battle taking place in the heavenly realm and we, as children of God, have not just been called to engage in this battle, but we also have been fully equipped to claim victory in it.

The Armor of God belongs to all of us who possess the indwelling Holy Spirit, but we must choose to take hold of it.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Ephesians 6:10-13 NASB

The 7 Pieces of the Armor of God

At first glance, it seems like there are only 6 different pieces of armor. However, if we look at the armor of God passage in Ephesians 6 in it’s context we see that there are actually 7 pieces of armor.

1. The Belt of Truth

Stand firm therefore, having belted your waist with truth… Ephesians 6:14

The first piece of the Armor of God is the Belt of Truth. In ancient times, soldiers used belts to secure their armor and weaponry, allowing them to move freely in battle. Similarly, as believers, we must anchor ourselves in truth – the truth of God’s Word and the truth of our identity in Christ. When we are rooted in truth, we become resistant to the deceptions and lies of the enemy.

2. The Breastplate of Righteousness

and having put on the breastplate of righteousness… Ephesians 6:14

The Breastplate of Righteousness serves as protection for the heart and vital organs. For believers, righteousness is not something we can achieve on our own; rather, it is imputed to us through faith in Jesus Christ. When we embrace righteousness, we guard ourselves against the attacks on our character and integrity, enabling us to maintain our spiritual purity.

3. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

and having strapped on your feet the preparation of the gospel of peace… Ephesians 6:15

In battle, soldiers need sturdy footwear to stand their ground and advance. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace equip us to be ambassadors of peace in a world full of strife and conflict. As we share the good news of Jesus Christ, we become instruments of reconciliation and bridge builders between people and God.

4. The Shield of Faith

in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Ephesians 6:16

The Shield of Faith is a critical piece of the Armor, designed to protect us from the enemy’s fiery darts of doubt and fear. Our faith in God acts as an impenetrable barrier, enabling us to extinguish the arrows aimed at our hearts. Through faith, we can overcome adversity and face challenges with confidence, knowing that God is in control.

5. The Helmet of Salvation

And take the helmet of salvation… Ephesians 6:17

The Helmet of Salvation guards our minds against the assaults of the enemy. It reminds us of our eternal hope and salvation in Christ. When we grasp the assurance of our salvation, we become less susceptible to discouragement and despair, fostering a renewed sense of purpose in our lives.

6. The Sword of the Spirit

and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God… Ephesians 6:17

The Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, is both a defensive and offensive weapon in the spiritual realm. Through reading, studying, and meditating on the Scriptures, we equip ourselves with divine wisdom and guidance. Armed with the Word, we can counter the enemy’s lies with truth and find strength to face any trial.

7. Prayer: The Ultimate Weapon

With every prayer and request, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be alert with all perseverance and every request for all the saints… Ephesians 6:18

Though not explicitly mentioned as a physical piece of armor, prayer is the underlying foundation of the Armor of God. Prayer is our direct communication with God, allowing us to seek His guidance, protection, and strength. It is through prayer that we invite God’s power into our lives and tap into the supernatural resources needed to withstand the challenges we encounter.
