Bible Verses About Faith in the Bible

Colossians Bible Study

These scriptures about faith in the Bible help to define what it means to trust God. Let’s talk about the word faith in the Bible.

Hebrews 11:1-2

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old gained approval.

Faith is placing assurance and confidence in something or someone for what is yet to be seen. Our faith is the evidence of things we can’t yet see. Hebrews 11 continues to list examples of men and women who gained God’s approval because of their faith in Him.

  • By faith Abel offered to God…
  • By faith Enoch was taken up…
  • By faith Noah prepared an ark…
  • By faith Sarah, past childbearing age, bore a son.

Hebrews 11:6

And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for the one who comes to God must believe that He exists, and that He proves to be One who rewards those who seek Him.

Faith is what pleases God. He desires that we seek and follow Him, especially in difficult times when we don’t always understand the circumstances we find ourselves in.

Ephesians 6:16

in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

This bible verse about faith teaches that our trust in God protects us from our spiritual enemy. In the moments that we are faced with trial or temptation, we can remember that we belong to God and that He is working all things together for our good. This knowledge shields us against the lies and accusations of Satan.

Hebrews 12:2

looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Jesus is the one who initiates and perfects our faith through the power of the Holy Spirit. When we place our faith in the work on the cross we receive our initial justification. Then, as we learn to walk in obedience to God through the power of the indwelling spirit, our faith is perfected.

Matthew 17:20

if you have faith the size of a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”

This Bible verse about faith in the New Testament teaches us that even a small amount of faith can accomplish great things for the kingdom of God.

Now that we have a definition of faith according to the Bible here are some scriptures that help us incorporate faith in God into our daily lives.

James 1:2-4

Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

This faith Bible verse is such a great reminder that God uses all of our difficulties to shape our character into the image of Christ Jesus. We can now look at our trials as a gift of God.

Isaiah 41:10

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Not only does God promise to always be with us, but He also promises to strengthen, help, and uphold us with His righteousness. We have nothing to fear when we walk in surrender to God and place our lives in His able hands.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

This bible verse about faith and trust is a great reminder to trust God in the moments when we don’t understand how He is working. His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. God has a full understanding of every detail of our lives; past, present, and future. It’s ok if we don’t.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

In moments of confusion or anxiety, we can reflect on the sovereignty and lordship of God. For now, we must endure the results of living in a fallen and sinful world, a day is coming when God’s name will be confessed and reverenced throughout the whole earth.

John 14:1

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

Placing faith in the person, work, and promise of God in Christ Jesus is a healing balm to a troubled heart. When we focus our minds on heavenly things and the hope of our eternal inheritance we invite joy and peace to rule in our hearts.

Ephesians 3:16-19

that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to all the fullness of God.

Paul prayed for inner strength that came from God dwelling in their hearts through the Holy Spirit. This strengthening that He provides is according to the riches of His glory. Christ has come to dwell in our hearts. He gives us power and resilience in our thoughts, emotions, and desires enabling us to walk through difficult seasons with faith and confidence.

Colossians 3:16

Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

The Christian life is not meant to be lived alone. We need the encouragement and fellowship of other believers to help us navigate through the storms of life.

Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

God’s people were about to take possession of the promised land; not as a result of works but as a result of God power among them. Joshua, before leading Israel into the land of Canaan, commands the people to be strong and courageous. In moments when we feel afraid we can look back and remember how God has displayed his power and love to us in the past. Remembering His faithfulness strengthens us to move forward in faith.

Matthew 14:31

Immediately Jesus reached out with His hand and took hold of him, and *said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?

This Bible verse about faith is a great reminder to trust God when we feel like we are drowning in a wave of the sea. God is never far away; He is willing and able to take hold of us and pull us out of deep waters.

1 Timothy 6:12

Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

This scripture teaches us that faith is a fight. Sometimes having faith in God is easy. Other times, we have to wrestle to keep our minds and hearts in a place of trusting God. This is why we need to take time to nurture our relationship with God. Knowing His character and love for us makes this fight much easier.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This bible verse on faith shows a vast, yet beautiful contrast. By faith, we are transferred from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. The book of Romans teaches that no man is saved by keeping the works of the law. Only through faith in Christ are we saved from our sins and adopted into the family of God.

1 Peter 1:6-9

In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which perishes though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Reflecting on these verses reminds me that faith isn’t just some abstract concept; it’s a living, breathing trust in the God of hope who holds our past, present, and future in His hands. It’s about leaning into God’s promises even when everything around us seems uncertain.

Take a moment to think about your own journey of faith. Maybe you’re walking through a season of doubt or facing challenges that seem insurmountable. Friend, let me encourage you: you are not alone. The same God who parted the Red Sea, who raised Jesus from the dead, is with you in every step you take.

So let’s hold onto these Bible verses about faith as anchors for our souls. Let’s choose to trust in God’s goodness, even when circumstances try to shake us. And let’s remember that our faith isn’t measured by the absence of fear or doubt, but by the steadfastness of our trust in the One who is faithful beyond measure.
