Bible Verses About Humility

It’s funny that God led me to some Bible verses about humility this morning. God knows what we need when we need it!

The Lord helped me to recognize that the position of my mind has been in a very selfish and arrogant posture. I have NOT wanted to admit it!

When we think of humility in the Bible, there may be some other questions that come to mind

  • What does the Bible say about humility?
  • What is God’s definition of humility?
  • How do I humble myself before God?

What the Bible Says About Humility

Humility is a quality that the Bible speaks highly of. However, if I’m completely honest I have to admit that it is something I’d rather learn about from a distance.

I want knowledge of its goodness and benefits, but many times, I don’t want to walk through the circumstances that lead to possessing it.

Sometimes, acquiring humility requires trial and testing. It requires hurt and pain. It requires stepping out of my little zone of comfort and choosing to put more faith and trust in Him.

Humility means I have to humble myself. It requires denying my preferences, my happiness, and my conveniences. Admitting those hard, undesired truths about the condition of my heart.

What is God’s Definition of Humility?

The word(s) humble/humility/humbled are mentioned over 100 times in the Bible. So, clearly, God has a lot to say about this topic.

If we were to look up the word humility in the New Testament Greek, we would find the word “praotes”. This word means gentleness, mildness, and meekness. In the Old Testament, we find, essentially, the same definition.

Humility is the proper response we should have as we consider ourselves in light of who God is and all He has done for us.

Bible Verses About Humility

As I read over some scriptures, His word pierced my heart with the blade of conviction. Although it can be unpleasant, there is beauty in conviction because it begins a flow of grace. Conviction flows towards repentance and repentance flows towards cleansing, refreshment, and renewing.

Here are some verses that show us what true humility is according to the Bible?

Bible Verses About Humbling Yourself Before God

There are many verses in the Bible about how God humbles those who are haughty and prideful. However, there are also many verses that tell us that we must humble ourselves before God.

Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you. James 4:10

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time – 1 Peter 5:6

Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted. – Matthew 23:26

and if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. – 2 Chronicles 7:14

Scriptures About the Benefits of Humility

As you saw above, God tells us that he honors and blesses those who humble themselves. In fact, if you read through the beatitudes in Matthew 5 you’ll notice that an attitude of humility is threaded throughout all of them.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. “Blessed are the gentle, for they will inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 5:3-10 NASB

Here are a few more promises of God that proceed from humility.

The Humble Are Revived

God says that He dwells with and revives the hearts of the humble.

I dwell on a high and holy place, and also with the contrite and lowly of spirit In order to revive the spirit of the lowly, to revive the heart of the contrite. Isaiah 57:15

The Humble Are Delivered

God delivers those who are humble.

When you are cast down, you will speak with confidence, and the humble person He will save. Job 22:29

The Humble Are Exalted

As we have seen, God exalts those who humble themselves before Him. He does this in His way and in HIs time.

Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you. James 4:10

The Humble Are Given Wisdom

God gives wisdom to those who seek humility.

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Proverb 11:2

The Humble Are Given Honor

God also honors those who are lowly in spirit.

Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor. Proverb 29:23

The Humble Are Great In His Kingdom

I love this promise! Our culture wants us to believe the exact opposite. According to the world’s wisdom, to become great requires a person to focus on oneself. This is not the case in God’s kingdom.

Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:4

Bible Verses About Humility

An Example of Humility in the Bible

Thankfully, the Bible does not leave us without great examples of humility for us to follow! Here is my favorite example of humility in the Bible.

Bible Verses about the Humility of Jesus

Bible verse about humility Matthew 11

Jesus gives us a great example of humility when he served His disciples by washing their feet.

Then He poured water into the basin, and began washing the disciples’ feet and wiping them with the towel which He had tied around Himself… Then, when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? 13 You call Me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord’; and you are correct, for so I am. 14 So if I, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. – John 13:5; 12-14 NASB

Humility is according to the very nature and character of Christ.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart – Matthew 11:29

If I truly desire to become molded and shaped more into His image, humility is to be sought after and treasured.
