Encouraging Bible Verses for Wives

The Bible is full of instructions on how we, as Christ’s followers, should be living. Today I’d like to share some Bible verses for Wives

Some of these verses are more for general living, but they do apply to wives.

I hope that this post encourages and challenges you in your walk!

NASB is the translation that I used when writing this post, it is one of the closest word-for-word translations.

Please note, these thoughts are not intended to be advice for women who are dealing with physical, emotional, or mental abuse. If you are dealing with any type of abuse, please seek a licensed Christian therapist who is trauma-informed and does not hold to a co-dependency model. It is okay to set boundaries in any relationship, even in marriage.

Bible Verses for Wives

The Bible is full of instructions for how we, as Christ’s followers, are called to walk in our daily lives. I firmly believe that those instructions are meant to help us learn how to treat our family (husbands and children) as much as others. Many of these Bible verses are for both Husbands and Wives.

Bible Verses About Marriage

  • Genesis 2:24
  • Ephesians 4
  • Ephesians 5:15-33
  • 1 Peter 3:7
  • Hebrews 13:4
  • Proverbs 18:22
  • Mark 10:6-9

God designed marriage to be between one man and one woman. They are called together, and leave their families, cleaving to and cherishing each other as a new family is formed.

Just as with any other relationship, we are called to encourage, build up, challenge, sharpen, nurture,  and cherish one another. This means that both husband and wife should be doing these things for the marriage relationship.

I highly recommend checking out Marg Mowczko and Philip B. Payne on the verses mentioned in this post. They are New Testament scholars who dig deep into the original Greek texts.

Many of these things Christians are called to, not just wives, however, I believe that as wives they are very important qualities to allow the Lord to refine in us.

When I say ‘characteristically’ focuses on the good, that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have hard, or down days, or doesn’t have to deal with trauma, but rather that overall she chooses to think on the good.

There are many, many more verses that apply to both Christian living and being a wife.

Bible Verses for Wives

A Godly Wife in the Bible

  • Proverbs 12:4
  • Proverbs 19:14
  • Proverbs 31:10-31
  • 1 Peter 3:3-4

Of course several of the other verses I have used talk about a godly wife and her role, these are some more that talk about godly womanhood and being what a godly wife looks like in the Word.

We can also look at stories of women like Hannah, Ruth, Esther, Abigail, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, and many other wives in the Bible (some are not even named) for more characteristics of godly wives.

Psalms

Proverbs

Alright, I know that these last two are pretty generic, and they are whole books, but when I need encouragement or refreshing, I turn to these books.

There is just something about them that is soul soothing and I know that I can always find comfort in them. Sometimes when I cannot put my feelings into words myself, I find that a Psalm sometimes expresses it more eloquently than I ever could.

And, often I stumble across something that more recent experience has given me more insight into and I understand it better.

As I touched on before, I often share that the way the Bible tells us to treat others also applies to our husbands and children, as well as brothers and sisters in the Lord, or even those who do not know the Lord.

I pray that these Bible verses for wives have encouraged, challenged, and equipped you in your role as a Christ-following woman and wife as they have me in my walk.

Are there any Bible verses for Wives that I missed? I would love to hear from you about it!
