Devotion: Make Me A Bell Sheep

I came across this quote from Elizabeth George’s book “Raising A Daughter After God’s Own Heart” that talked about the purpose of what is called a “Bell Sheep”.

“…when a shepherd noticed a sheep who willingly followed him and stayed near him, he hung a bell around the neck of that sheep so the flock would follow the bell sheep.. who, in turn, was following the Shepherd.”

I love this. All the Bell Sheep had to do was stay close to the shepherd. The natural result was leading others closer to him as well.

As a child of God, and a mom, my desire is to lead others, especially my children, to a relationship with Christ.

A great example of this is when Paul told the Philippians to follow His example because he was following Christ.

Brothers and sisters, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us. – Philippians 3:17

Reading this today reminded me that the best way to do this is to simply stay close to Him for myself.

It is my hope that the interactions within my relationships with others would be the overflow of my relationship with my Shepherd. As others follow my example I pray that they will, naturally, be following the Lord also.

Can I, with confidence, encourage others with these words Paul spoke to the Philippians?

That is the question I want to encourage both you and me to consider today.

Are we walking close to Him? If others were to follow us would they draw closer to Christ?

Prayer

Lord, would you help me to be a bell sheep for the people in my life? I want to lead others towards a closer relationship with You. Help me to walk closely by your side so as others follow me they will naturally be led closer to You.
