Examples of Obedience in the Bible

We’re going to look at some examples of obedience in the bible and how God blessed those who had faith and believed his word.

God loves when we are obedient to his word. In the book of John 14:15 it says, “If you love me then keep my commandments”. It doesn’t get much clearer than that. Staying obedient to God will lead to some terrific rewards in life.

We see the rewards of being obedient to our parents, teachers, and even at our place of employment. Imagine what God’s rewards are when we stay obedient to him!

Examples of Obedience in the Bible

Here are a couple of examples of men in the Bible who obeyed God.

Noah Obeyed God

Noah’s ark is an excellent example of obedience in the bible. God knew Noah was righteous. Because of this, he chose to save him during the horrible flood that was sent to destroy the earth. Noah knew that his faith was being tested. People laughed at him and he lost friendships.

When you have an assignment from the Lord, you do it. It doesn’t matter what anybody says or thinks.

If you love me then keep my commandments”. John 14:15 NASB

Noah was obedient and faithful when God asked him to build the Ark (Genesis 6:11). God was upset at how corrupt the world had become. People were violent and disobedient. God wanted to wipe out the earth of its evil. Noah loved the lord and knew that his relationship with God was a priority.

When God told Noah to build this Ark, he promised that his entire family would be safe. Sometimes when God tells us something, we should expect it by faith! Although it took a long time for Noah to build the Ark he knew and believed that one day the flood would come.

Abraham Obeyed God

There are several more types of obedience in the bible. The story of Abraham is a great example. God instructed him to flee the country, in other words, leave his comfort zone, and go to a strange place. Not only did God want Abraham to leave his father’s house, but separate from his family! God promised to make him into a great nation, to be a blessing to others, and to make his name great. Abraham was promised to be famous!

Later we see that God wanted Abraham to sacrifice his son (Genesis 17:17). Abraham didn’t want to do it. After all, this was the child God promised him. Now he had to sacrifice him? Abraham had faith and knew God would provide.

Benefits of Obedience to God

When God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son, Abraham knew he had no choice but to obey his commands. God already had a plan intact. He was testing Abraham’s loyalty! In the end, Abraham ended up not having to give up his son Isaac. God was pleased with Abraham’s obedience and faith. You will find in life that when you obey God, situations and things will work out in your favor.

If you obey and serve your lord, then you’ll live your life in prosperity and spend your years in pleasures”. – Job 36:11

Abraham received multiple benefits because of his faith and obedience to God. He became wealthy and had good relationships. His children inherited the land and the promises of God.

If God asks you to do something, be obedient and patient. Many times we make the mistake of thinking that their reward will come quickly. That’s where faith comes in. Abraham was 100 when he had his son. God told him at age 75 that he was going to have children. That’s 25 years of waiting. If God said it, it’s going to happen.
