I love early mornings. I’m usually the first one out of bed. After pouring a cup of coffee, I grab my Bible and spend some time hiding God’s Word in my heart.

Sometimes, this quiet time is interrupted by kids, my dog, or the need for more sleep, but I try to make it my goal to spend some time with God and His word each day.

What It Means to Hide God’s Word in Your Heart

Hiding God’s word in your heart means placing value and worth in knowing God and His scriptures.

When we value another person it means that we care about them. We spend time nurturing a relationship with them. The same is true with God. We have a relationship with God through His word. Therefore, spending time in God’s Word should be a high priority. Our relationship with God deserves first place in all areas of our lives.

6 Practical Ways to Get the Word of God in Your Heart

Here are some practical ways that you can plant the Word of God in your heart.

Hide God’s Word In Your Heart By Reading Your Bible Daily

If you have not yet established a routine of reading the Bible every day, I would suggest that this needs to be your starting point.

Jesus said, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of the mouth of God.’” – Matthew 4:4

What bread is to our bodies, God’s Word is to our souls. We must be continually feeding on it in order to keep our faith strong and sustained. Spending time in God’s Word is important for a growing relationship with Him.

Hide God’s Word in Your Heart By Memorizing Scripture

Memorizing scripture is another great way to hide God’s Word in your heart. This is a discipline that we should all seek to grow in. Having a store of God’s promises committed to memory helps us to stand on truth during seasons and moments of trial and difficulty. It’s much easier to recall the truth in God’s word when we have passages of scripture memorized.

I have scripture cards that I keep with me. I can pull them out during downtimes and meditate on His truth.

Hide God’s Word in Your Heart by Praying Scripture

Another way to hide God’s word in our hearts is to use scripture to form the foundation of our prayers

Praying scripture is a powerful way to pray! Plus, it also helps us to memorize the verses we are praying about.

Praying scripture is also a great component to add to your prayer strategy. I like to keep a list of bible verses to pray for my kids, my marriage, my pastors and leaders, and for my lost loved ones.

Having these scriptures written down helps me to be intentional and strategic in my prayers for others.

Hide God’s Word In Your Heart by Keep A Bible Study Journal

Another great way to keep God’s Word in your heart is to keep a Bible study journal. I, personally, like to use a binder since it’s easier to move pages around, but you could also use a simple spiral notebook.

A Bible study journal is a place to write your thoughts as you study God’s Word. There are lots of different Bible study methods and Bible study printables available online that you can include in your notebook. These resources are great for helping you to make a meaningful quiet time with the Lord.

Hide God’s Word In Your Heart Through Bible Study

I believe that every believer needs to know how to study the Bible for themselves. Bible reading is important, but it cannot replace the diligent work of correctly observing and interpreting the scriptures.

I love using the inductive method of Bible study because its process actually teaches and equips you to study the Bible on your own. The inductive method uses a 3-step process of observation, interpretation, and application.

Listen to Praise and Worship Music

When I’m trying to help one of my kids memorize their verse for AWANA I will sometimes turn the verse into a song.

The cadence and rhythm of music have a powerful way of helping us memorize the lyrics. When we listen to music about God and His truth we are hiding these messages in our hearts and minds.

I love listening to some of the older hymns and songs that quote scripture within their lyrics.

Benefits of Hiding God’s Word in Your Heart

Now that we have seen a few different ways we can hide the scriptures in our hearts, let’s also consider why it’s important.

Hide God's Word In Your Heart

Knowing God’s Word Keeps Us From Sin

I have hidden your word in my heart that I may not sin against You. – Psalm 119:11

God’s Word reveals the truth about what is right and what is wrong. If we are hiding His Word in our hearts we are better equipped to walk according to what God says is good and right.

God’s Word Gives Wisdom and Instruction

The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. – Psalm 19:7

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. – Psalm 119:105

All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness. – 2 Timothy 3:16

For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. – Proverbs 2:6

Wisdom is from God. Therefore, the scriptures contain the supreme source of wisdom and the instructions we need for godly living.

God’s Word Gives Joy and Peace

The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart. – Psalm 19:8

I have inherited Your testimonies forever, for they are the joy of my heart. – Psalm 119:111

I love how the Psalms reveal the joy we find in knowing God and spending time in His presence. As we spend time with God’s Word and nurture our relationship with Him, we discover that He fulfills our deepest needs and longings with His loving presence.

God’s Word Gives Hope and Faith

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. – Romans 10:17

As we meditate on the promises of God’s Word we are filled with faith. His promises hold the treasure of our hope. A hope that one day we will be clothed in eternity. As we fix our eyes on the hope we have in Jesus, we can walk through any circumstance, trial, or difficulty of this life with the knowledge that it’s only temporary.
