How to Pray Psalm 91 Over Your Family

Praying Psalm 91 is a  powerful passage from scripture to pray over your family.

In today’s world, where chaos and corruption seem to lurk on every corner, praying for God’s protection over your family is probably at the forefront of your mind.

Psalm 91 is a beautiful and easily personalized prayer that you can take and apply when praying for your loved ones. Let’s get into specifically why that is!

Praying Psalm 91 Over Your Family

I absolutely LOVE reading through the Psalms. In fact, I’ve been trying to help my daughter memorize important Psalms because they are SO powerful and fill us with so much peace in our daily Christian walk.

Psalm 91 is no different!

Before we begin breaking down this specific passage into specific prayer points for your family, let’s take a quick look at the context and message of Psalm 91.

One of the most interesting things about this one is that no one is 100% certain of the author! Some think maybe it was Moses or David, who wrote most of the Psalms.

Something we DO know is that this Psalm can be read as an answer to the one before, Psalm 90, so I would definitely recommend reading through that first.

Psalm 91 is basically about how God is our fortress and our refuge

It’s about how God hears our cries and protects us from our enemies when we make Him our dwelling place. It’s a prayer of clinging to Him and Him fulfilling His promises in scripture that He made.

It is such a comforting Psalm to read through, and very powerful!!

So what can you do to unlock the power of Psalm 91 over your family?

Pray it!

Here are some great tips to keep in mind when praying this Psalm over your family, with prayer points and scripture references!

How to Pray Psalm 91 as a Powerful Prayer of Protection

The main theme of this Psalm, as we mentioned before, is the theme of protection.

If you are a mom like me, you may just know a thing or two about worry and anxiety when it comes to releasing our children out into this world.

But that’s why it’s so important to instill a love for God in them, so they will be well prepared! We are raising our children up to go out and be His ambassadors. That is super empowering!

But we also want to make sure we are doing our job in praying for their protection, mentally, physically, and spiritually especially.

Here are some specific prayer points you can take, as well as some personalized prayers for your family from Psalm 91!

Psalm 91 Prayers for God’s Protective Presence

Sometimes we just need that reminder that God is present. He is ALWAYS there and that is a huge comfort when we are feeling doubtful or fearful.

Here is a sample prayer for God’s protective presence in your family’s lives:

Father God, I thank You for Your faithful presence in my life and in the life of my family. I ask right now that Your protective presence will always be known in our lives, that we know we can turn to You and not be fearful of this world, nor the schemes of the enemy. Send Your angels to guard us God, and let us glorify You in all that we do. Amen.

“For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” Psalm 91:11 NIV

Prayers for God to Be Refuge and Fortress

One of the hardest things I struggle with as a mom is that one day my child will walk away from the Lord. I know His promises in scripture, and I spend many a day praying that love for Him will be instilled in my daughter.

This prayer is an excellent one to pray for your kids (and spouse), that they will always run to the Lord and not away from Him, and take refuge in His arms.

Father God, I lift my family up before You right now and ask that You always be their refuge and fortress (v.2). I pray that when trials come their way, they remember that You are the one who holds them. You are a mighty fortress God, You say so in Your Word and I pray that reminder over them. I pray they don’t turn to worldly things to keep them “safe,” but seek You out as their refuge and strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:2 NIV

Prayers for Protection Against Snares of the Enemy

YES! This is the good stuff right here, so don’t miss it.

There is nothing more powerful than being able to come before the Lord, knowing the power He has and being able to pray AGAINST the attacks of the enemy.

And not only that, but that Satan HAS to leave at the sound of Jesus’ name. Wow!

It really changes the way you pray for protection over your family. Psalm 91 beautifully lays out a prayer for your family to be protected against the snares and schemes from the enemy.

Check it out…

Lord almighty, how great and powerful is Your name! I know that You are ALIVE and well! You tell us in Your Word that Satan trembles at the sound of Your name, so I pray that Your name is always on our lips. I pray for protection against any schemes or flaming arrows that Satan is brewing for my family. Lord we ask in YOUR holy name, that the snares of the enemy be defeated, and Your protection over our home, our bodies, and our minds. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly plague. He will cover you with His feathers; under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and rampart.” Psalm 91:3-4 NIV
