As Christians, we know that prayer is powerful. Therefore we should be using scripture to pray for the lost people in our lives.
That neighbor down the street. Your family member caught in the trap of addiction. That friend who was hurt by a past church experience. We all know somebody. Someone who desperately needs to know that there is freedom, love, and salvation in Jesus.
Who is that someone in your life that needs your prayers? For some, you or I may be the only person in their life praying for them.
How to Pray for Someone Who Is Lost
When we pray scripture we connect God’s kingdom truth and resources to our experiences and circumstances. Therefore, using scripture to form the foundation of our prayers is a powerful way to pray for the lost!
How to Use Scripture to Pray for the Lost
We must remember that when we pray for unbelievers we are going to battle in the heavenly places on their behalf. There are certain battle strategies that we can exercise by praying over specific areas.
Here are some bible verses to pray for the lost. Use these scriptures to make personalized prayers for the person you are praying for.
Pray Against the Enemy
The bible says that Satan is the ruler of this world. He is a master deceiver and he is constantly on the prowl seeking those to devour through his lies. He is working tirelessly to blind the hearts of unbelievers from seeing the Truth. One of the greatest ways we can pray for the lost is to ask the Lord to bind the enemy and his influence in their hearts and minds. Here is some scripture to pray against the enemy.
in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God… For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. – 2 Corinthians 4:4,6 (NASB)
perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. – 2 Timothy 2:25-26 (NASB)
Pray for Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit
The role of the Holy Spirit in the heart and mind of unbelievers is to convict and to reveal. He convicts a person of their sin, but also of the righteousness available to them in Jesus. He also reveals the power of God. Not only do we want to pray against the enemy’s influence in the lives of unbelievers, but we also want to pray for increased sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s influence! Here is some scripture to pray for sensitivity to the Holy Spirit
for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment – John 16:7-8 (NASB)
My message and my preaching were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power so that your faith would not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power. – 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 (NASB)
Pray for Humility
Even in the moments that the Holy Spirit draws a person towards repentance, it takes great humility for anybody to confess their sins and their need for salvation. I know that it did for me! Therefore, we also need to pray for a humble and contrite heart. A heart that willing to bow in humility before it’s Creator. Here is some scripture to pray for humility.
how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come. – 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 (NASB)
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 5:3 (NASB)
Pray for Salvation and Deliverance
Last but absolutely not least, we need to intercede for salvation for the lost!
Really, all the other areas we pray for could be lumped under this one. Salvation is the unbeliever’s greatest need. They need to hear that Jesus came to die on the cross for their sins to take their punishment and that eternal life is offered to them! We must be praying that they hear and receive this Good News. Here are some scriptures to pray for the salvation of your loved ones.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” – John 14:6 (NASB)
God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 (NASB)
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jeremiah 31:33 (NASB)
